THE WOOD FRAMED CHURCHES
The builders used the local materials of the region and constructed the churches along the lines of the great market halls of the region. Unique in France and classed as a historical monument, the ten churches and a chapel built between the end of the Fifteenth and the Eighteenth Century are constructed entirely of massive oak timbers infilled with a mixture of clay and straw. We visit one of the most interesting.
THE ABBEY OF TROIS FONTAINES
Founded in 1118 by St.Bernard of Clairvaux, by the end of the twelfth century nothing remained except the ruins of the abbey’s church. The abbey was reconstructed in 1741. Romance pervades the walks in the abbey grounds where statues and fountains in the classical style are set out amidst many rare trees.
